Guilt by association
Oct. 11th, 2005 11:22 amMy random mp3 collection just popped up "Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life" sung Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. And I started snickering. Any merits this song ever had have been totally overshadowed by memories of Young Frankenstein.
This lead me to thinking about songs that someone reasonably aware of pop culture can longer hear without thinking about something else. Not a personal feeling -- lots of songs mean something specific to individuals, associated with a particular time or person. I am talking about shared cultural associations, often movies, commercials, television, etc. But something other than the music video.
I sometimes have memories of Apocalypse Now when I hear "The End" by The Doors. "Stuck In The Middle With You" is now associated with Reservoir Dogs. In fact, Tarentino's good for that -- "You Never Can Tell" makes everyone think of John Travolta and Uma Thurman dancing in Pulp Fiction.
What songs do you have strong mass-cultural associations with?
