Tiring week.

Work was not fun this week. I have been trying to track down a mysterious load average problem on one of the SPAM filtering boxes.

Thursday I took the train to my parents, so that I could take a 4 hour car ride to Maryland, to go to a family reunion at some campground. I got lousy sleep last night, due to: (1) too early bed time (11:30, as opposed to my usual 1AM), (2) annoying muttering in his sleep from a cousin who was sharing the room, (3) my brother's dog, who was sharing the room, (4) the so-so bunk bed, (5) my brother, in the lower bunk of the bed, who would shake the whole thing when he rolled over and (6) the temperature, which was too warm for my mummy bag, but too cold for nothing.

It was nice to see some of my cousins and their kids, though. I wound up playing pool with the son of a cousin of mine I had played much pool with in our youth.

I rode back to NJ today, then got on the train back to Hoboken. Seven hours after I left camp (including a dinner stop), I made it home. My backpack broke on the way home. One of the straps tore completely through. I guess it was time for a new backpack anyway, since the waterproofing was starting to peel off the insides. As it was a bag I bought back in 1989 in preparation for my trip to Australia, and since then have taken it to Mexico, Europe, and the Caribbean, as well as multiple NJ/PA/MD camping trips, I guess I can't complain too much.

My new Netflix disc showed up broken. I need to send it back.

Think I'll go check on the photos I took of the family reunion.

You should ask Mitch what brand of bag he's got. I had a chance to look at it yesterday; it's pretty strong. Everything is reinforced, even the carrying loop at the top. The compartments are roomy and well-divided. It's probably the best all-around backpack I've seen that wasn't one of those extended hiking bags.

Mitch informs me that his bag is a Lucas Sport. It also has wheels and a handle that folds into a separate compartment in the back.

I sympathize. I still mourn for my first Jansport, which held up for 4 summers of resident camp, 2 years of high school, 2 years of college, and made trips to London, Boston and Denver.

Yours had a good life and got to see more of the world than most of us did.

A toast, to a loyal backpack.
