A few other nethack tips I forgot to mention to [livejournal.com profile] catwithbell yesterday: lizard corpses don't decay. Kill one, and keep it in your inventory. If you are fighting a cockatrice and find yourself turning to stone, immediately eat the lizard. It will prevent petrification.

Next, if the cockatrice leaves a corpse behind, AND you are wearing gloves/gauntlets (very important), you can pick up the corpse and wield it as a weapon, petrifying monsters left and right. However, there is danger here: if you fall into a pit, or fall down stairs (because you are Burdened), you will likely hit yourself with it and have it kill you. So only wield it when you are about to hit something. Otherwise, wield your regular weapon instead for heading down stairs, etc., and you will be safe.

Wow.

I really have migrated to a different planet, after all....

I knew those tips.

Now, I seem to be giving up sleep for nethack. This is not so good. But it will pass in a few days.

I hope.

Aww, don't miss too much sleep.

How about these:
If you fall in a pit, you can climb out faster by moving in a diagonal direction than horizontal or vertical.

If you're lawful and over 5th level, you can get Excalibur by dipping a longsword in a fountain. (It may take a few tries.)

If you find a polymorph trap, and have a magic whistle, you can polymorph your pet by standing next to the trap and repeatedly blowing the whistle.

If your pet dies, you can zap the corpse with a wand of undead turning to resurrect your pet.

I assume you know about writing Elbereth, but you can also get a similar effect from dropping a scroll of scare monster and standing on that square. Be aware that everytime you pick up a scroll of scare monster, it drops one class of blessedness until it crumbles to dust as you pick it up. (It's the only scroll that does that, so you can ID them if you pick up a random scroll and have it crumble to dust).

Statues may contain spellbooks. The lower level you find them, the higher the chance. However, don't bother hauling statues down levels, the book is in there or not when the statue is generated; moving it to a lower level doesn't help.

If you can cast remove curse, you can de-curse anything, even non-weapons, by first wielding the cursed item, then casting the spell. Cursed non-weapons don't stick to your hand when you wield them.

If you have teleportitis (from eating nymphs, leprechauns, tengus (which can give you teleport control)), and have enough Power, you can teleport at will by pressing ^T. You still need teleport control to control where you go, though.

If you are stuck levitating, and have the hit points to take it, floating over a sink will cause you to "sink" (fall to the ground).
