Yet Another Nethack Ascension

catwithbell yesterday: lizard corpses don't decay. Kill one, and keep it in your inventory. If you are fighting a cockatrice and find yourself turning to stone, immediately eat the lizard. It will prevent petrification.
Next, if the cockatrice leaves a corpse behind, AND you are wearing gloves/gauntlets (very important), you can pick up the corpse and wield it as a weapon, petrifying monsters left and right. However, there is danger here: if you fall into a pit, or fall down stairs (because you are Burdened), you will likely hit yourself with it and have it kill you. So only wield it when you are about to hit something. Otherwise, wield your regular weapon instead for heading down stairs, etc., and you will be safe.
